“I think that when you invite people to your home, you invite them to yourself.”
– Oprah Winfrey
At home is where we all want to be, it’s where we are most comfortable, familiar, and happy. You know that feeling of relief when you walk in the door after being away for a while; a big weight has lifted from your shoulders and now you feel relaxed and secure. For many of us our home holds 30, 40 and even 50 years of memories, it’s part of who we are.
The new term “Aging in Place” is taking center stage at all aging conferences as baby boomers start to navigate their golden years and are looking for alternatives to assisted living and nursing homes. The new trend is to modify, or adapt, your home to accommodate you as you age with items like grab bars, walk in bath tubs, wide doorways for wheelchairs, higher toilet seats and video monitoring. Bob Hardina of Mid-Coast Energy says spending $5,000 to adapt your home could make a huge difference in the quality of your life and will enable you to stay home longer. $5,000 sounds like a lot of money until you realize that it will only pay for one month of assisted living.
Many thanks to Spectrum Generations and Mid-Coast Energy of Damariscotta for hosting the Aging in Place Symposium on September 27, 2012. FCA’s Kim Fenn presented to an enthusiastic group eager to learn about new options for aging in place.
Full Circle America’s Kim Fenn and Eric Winter attended the Southern Maine Senior Expo at the Freeport Hilton Garden Inn.
